Beltre Named Rangers' Clemente Nominee

It used to be Michael Young who was the Texas Rangers' annual nominee for MLB's Roberto Clemente Award, an award given for service for which every team has a nominee. It's basically the "good guy" award named after the Hall of Famer who died tragically in a plane crash.

The winner of the award will be announced at the World Series in October, which the Rangers will obviously have nothing to do with. Beltre said he's thrilled with the nomination after his continuous giving the Texas Rangers Foundation and his involvement with the RBI Program, which helps promote the game in inner cities.

“Any time a Latino player can be associated with that name – in any way – it’s an honor,” Beltre said of the award named after the Puerto Rican great. “To me, that is an accomplishment already.”

Beltre also does a lot of charitable work in his native Dominican Republic in the offseason.
