While the attention recently has been on Dez Bryant’s supposed Wal-Mart video, Dez Bryant’s contract and now Dez Bryant’s hamstring, there’s something else among the receiving corps that deserves some attention.
Cole Beasley’s moves.
Simply put, cornerbacks – Cowboys nor Rams – can cover the cat-quick slot receiver.
Bryant got the big money and will likely produce big statistics despite big attention. But, quietly, Beasley signed a new contract and I expect him to have a career-best season.
And to think, three years ago he walked away from the NFL before his career even got started.
Beasley hasn’t grown physically. He’s still a 5-foot-8, 160-pound blur. But he has matured in experience. He’s now using his unique skill set to resemble – yes, I’ll say it, Wes Welker. He’s learned angles and subtleties and change of pace.
Rams’ cornerback Lamarcus Joyner was the latest to be befuddled by Beasley’s quick first step off the line of scrimmage, speedy cuts and clever moves after the catch.

If camp is any indication, Beasley is going to obliterate last year’s career-highs of 420 receiving yards and four touchdowns. And I don’t think I’m alone in feeling comfortable if he was the Cowboys’ safe-yet-speedy punt returner.
