Dallas Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer missed the first three games of the season as he recovered from microfracture surgery on his knee, and he’s been mixed into the defensive line rotation in the nine games since. But he still hasn’t made a start.
That could change on Thursday, as George Selvie is dealing with a thumb injury.
Selvie’s injury aside, head coach Jason Garrett said this week that--based on his play alone--the Cowboys wanted to see more of Spencer. In nine games, Spencer has 20 tackles, including two for a loss, and a half a sack.
"He's had a role that we hope that can be increasing," Garrett said, per Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas. "He's been part of rotation. I think at different games he's showed up. Other games he hasn't been quite as effective. But he's a good football player and I think he's learning to play this scheme as he goes. He's been a stand-up outside linebacker for most of his pro career so I think getting him down into his stance and getting him comfortable down in and down out doing what the job requires has been a process but in certain games he's shown up, other games not quite as much. We certainly need him down the stretch."
If Spencer does start, it would be his first start since the 2012 season.
