With offensive coordinator and playcaller Bill Callahan’s future in Dallas uncertain after a season full of questionable calls and shaky game management, the idea that Norv Turner--who served as the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator from 1991-1993, winning back-to-back Super Bowls with the team--could return to take the reins has been floated out there.
As BlueStar’s Adam Boedeker pointed out earlier this week, Turner is still under contract with the Cleveland Browns, where he spent 2013, but he’s likely to become a casualty of the regime change set in motion when Rob Chudzinski was fired as head coach last week.
So is a reunion between Turner and Dallas a good idea?
According to Troy Aikman, absolutely. He’s just not sure Turner would be open to it.
“I don’t think there’s anybody better than Norv Turner because I know what he meant to my career and I’ve seen what he’s done elsewhere with far lesser talent,’’ Aikman told 105.3-FM The Fan’s Mike Fisher and Nathan Wood on Tuesday. “But I don’t think it’s quite as simple as what some might think even though he and Jason (Garrett) are close. The reason I say that is the Cowboys had an opportunity to hire Norv as head coach before they hired Wade Phillips (in 2007), and at the 11th hour they decided to hire Wade. I’m not speaking for Norv because we’ve had no conversations as it relates to this. But if it were me and that had happened to me, I’d say ‘Hey, I’m not real sure that I want to come be a part of this now.’”
