Just hours after saying he would probably restructure his deal in the near future, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo made good on his word, freeing up nearly $13 million in cap space for the team.
This is the second consecutive offseason in which Romo has restructured his deal, which at $108 million total is by far the biggest on the team. This time around, the Cowboys basically made $16 million of the $17 million Romo’s due in 2015 a signing bonus, and the maneuvering will give Dallas an extra $12.8 million in cap space.
As David Helman of Fox Sports Southwest points out, this will bump Romo’s cap number up pretty significantly in coming years. Because of Wednesday’s restructure, Romo’s cap number will increase by a little over $3 million a year from 2016 through 2019. In those years, Romo will represent a cap hit of between $20.8 million and $25.2 million for the Cowboys.
