A Look Around the West

In a weekly post, we'll take a look around the AL West — what's happened so far, and what's on tap in the coming days.

1. Seattle Mariners (22-17) — The Mariners, like every team in the division other than the Astros, are 5-5 over their last 10 games as the division is pretty much staying status quo. They've been keeping the Rangers at a short arm's length for much of the season and are back in first after the Rangers were swept in Oakland. Next up: Today, 11:35 a.m., at Baltimore Orioles.

2. Texas Rangers (22-19) — The Rangers went 7-2 on a lengthy home stand and headed off to Oakland to play a bad A's team, and they were promptly swept as their offense went cold. Pretty much the only offense right now is coming from Ian Desmond, and hopefully going to a more hitter-friendly park in Houston could cure those woes. Next up: Friday, 7:10 p.m., at Houston Astros.

3. Oakland A's (19-22) — The A's are hot, thanks to a sweep of the Rangers behind an epic series from Khris Davis, who hit three bombs in Tuesday's walk-off win, including the game-winning grand slam that put a nail in the coffin of Shawn Tolleson's closer's gig. Next up: Tonight, 9:05 p.m., vs. New York Yankees.

4. Los Angeles Angels (18-22) — The Angels are just frankly in trouble. They have no offense outside of a few guys and their pitching staff is in shambles thanks to a lack of depth that has been hurt further by injury. Next up: Tonight, 9:05 p.m., vs. Los Angeles Dodgers.

5. Houston Astros (17-24) — The Astros could sweep the White Sox with a win on Thursday, which would be huge for their floundering confidence as a team. The team that was supposed to win the West this year still has plenty of time, but their start has left a lot to be desired. Next up: Tonight, 7:10 p.m., at Chicago White Sox.
