A Day After Being Cut by Cowboys, Jasper Brinkley Joins Giants

Brinkley was released to make room for new OT Jordan Mills on Monday

It looks like veteran linebacker Jasper Brinkley will be on the field for Sunday’s season opener at AT&T Stadium, after all.

Brinkley was signed by the New York Giants on Tuesday. He was released by the Cowboys on Monday to make room for new backup offensive tackle Jordan Mills, after initially making the roster out of camp.

The more cynical among us might suggest that the Giants are just trying to glean some knowledge of the Cowboys’ defense with the pick-up ahead of the season opener on Sunday, but as David Moore of the Dallas Morning News is quick to point out, the Giants did need depth at the linebacker position and Brinkley visited New York before choosing Dallas in free agency--so the interest was there.

Brinkley was brought in to Dallas to provide depth at middle linebacker in March before they re-signed Rolando McClain, but it became clear, he wasn’t really close to the top of that group. Anthony Hitchens opened camp as the starter at Mike linebacker, and Kyle Wilber and Andrew Gachkar leapfrogged him for first team reps when Hitchens went down.
