WNBA Players Brittney Griner, Glory Johnson Suspended for 7 Games Each

Phoenix Mercury standout player Brittney Griner and fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson have been suspended after their domestic violence arrest last month, the league announced Friday.

The two were booked into jail in Phoenix following their arrest on April 22, and later released.

Griner and Johnson have been suspended for seven games without pay, league president Laurel J. Richie said in a statement.

"It is my responsibility to protect the league and uphold its values," Richie's statement read. "Our athletes represent the WNBA, and they all must abide by the league's standards of conduct.  In this case, Brittney and Glory failed to do so, and that is unacceptable."

Officers arrested Griner and Johnson, who plays for the Tulsa Shock, after a fight between the couple turned physical, Goodyear police spokeswoman Lisa Kutis said. No weapons were involved, and neither woman required hospital care for their minor injuries, Kutis said.

The pair got married in a ceremony at a Phoenix resort last week.

Griner helped the Phoenix Mercury win a championship this past September. She led the league with a record 129 blocks and was the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year. She also helped the U.S. win a gold medal last month at the world championship.
