“Voice of Knox City” Meets His Favorite Team

Lyndon Baty meets the Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks made a dream come true for a teenage suffering from a dangerous illness.

15-year-old Lyndon Baty cannot go to school for fear that his suppressed immune system wouldn't be able to fight infection. Lyndon was born with infantile polycystic kidney disease, which lead to him having only one working kidney that only functions at about 12-percent of what it should.

Due to treatments, Lyndon's immune system is almost nonexistent. Lyndon now goes to school via a robot -- dubbed "The Baty Bot" -- but is still able to be enjoy sports by being the "Voice of Knox City" in the press box above football games.

Lyndon had told NBC 5, when we profiled him in November 2011, about his favorite team -- the Dallas Mavericks. Through that story, Mavs guard Delonte West learned of Lyndon's condition and wanted to do something to help.

West and the Mavericks organization brought the Batys to the Feb. 11 game at the American Airlines Center, but the special event for Lyndon would continue well past the double overtime win by the Mavs.

After the game, NBC 5's Matt Barrie told Lyndon he wanted to interview the teen once again. What we didn't tell him was that we wouldn't be alone.

Jason Terry, Vince Carter, Jason Kidd, Lamar Odom, Shawn Marion, and Delonte West all visited Lyndon, with West giving him an exclusive tour through the facility.

But Lyndon's incredible night was topped off by a visit from Dirk Nowitzki, who gave Lyndon a pair of shoes worn by the superstar. Nowitzki sat with Lyndon as the two discussed last year's championship season and a public statue for Dirk.

For Lyndon, it was an experience to remember. "I haven't felt this good in two years," Lyndon said.
