UNT Fires Head Coach Dan McCarney After Homecoming Loss to Portland State

University of North Texas head coach Dan McCarney was fired Saturday after the Mean Green's homecoming 66-7 loss to Portland State, Rick Villarreal, UNT Athletics Director confirmed.

An interim coach for the remainder of the season was expected to be announced soon after the shakeup.

"This is a really a tough decision, but after a complete evaluation of the University of North Texas football program, we have decided to make a change at head coach," Villarreal said.

"I will always cherish my relationship with coach McCarney and he's done nothing but great things for us in his time here, but we felt like this was the best thing we needed to do for the program moving forward," Villarreal said.

"Obviously we have been really struggling lately," said McCarney.

The coach was 22-32 in his four plus seasons with North Texas and led the Mean Green to the 2014 Heart of Dallas Bowl Championship.

McCarney had signed a five-year, $600,000 contract two months after the bowl championship.

A national search for a replacement coach was set to begin immediately, Villarreal said.
