The Ticket Gives Arlington Seguin Broadcast It Deserves

SportsRadio 1310 The Ticket righted a radio wrong Friday night.

Two weeks after a now former commentator for JacketRadio.com made racially insensitive remarks about the Arlington Seguin High School football team and its cheerleaders, The Ticket's sports director, Sean Bass, and hosts Jake Kemp and Donovan Lewis stepped into the booth Friday night to give the team the broadcast it deserves.

"A guy that didn't understand the power of the microphone said terrible things about cheerleaders, players, and really insulted a community," Bass said. "I just thought we have this signal, we have the man power, why not do something fun for them and fun for us?"

It's been nearly five years since high school football was broadcast on The Ticket. Friday's gesture of goodwill changed that.

"Once I heard Sean having the idea about trying to do something good for the kids at Arlington Seguin, I wanted to jump on board," said Lewis, co-host of the Norm-N-D Invasion.

The Ticket's presence at the game and on the radio did not go unnoticed.

"Some people on the team felt as if (the racist remarks) caused a lot of problems. When we started hearing this we just felt as if people cared about us more," said senior linebacker Deshawn Baker.

The Ticket is one of the nation's top sports radio stations, but even Lewis was surprised by the players' reaction.

"I asked coach, 'Hey, the kids probably don't know a lot about The Ticket,' and he's like, 'Man, they are fired up that you guys are here,'" Lewis said. "That makes me feel good that maybe they'll have a little motivation or a little juice for tonight's game."

Even in a loss, the broadcast did provide an additional spark for the Cougars, who with only two wins on the season kept the game close with the playoff-bound Burleson Elks the entire game.

"We've got the best broadcasting radio station here in the building tonight with The Ticket. It doesn't get any better than that," said Arlington Seguin Head Coach Joe Gordon. "We just talked about all week embracing it and embracing each other and being the catalyst for showcasing what love is all about in high school sports."
