Spring Football Hits Full Throttle

Majority of big spring games to go off this week

Tuesday

Richland, 6 p.m., Birdville Fine Arts and Athletic Complex
After a 9-1 regular season and a first-round playoff exit at the hands of Arlington Bowie, the Rebels have a lot to build on from last season's regular-season success. Getting Bowie in the first round is never going to be easy. The Rebels do return their stud QB Tyler Cotton, who threw for 2,662 yards, 21 touchdowns and just six picks last season.

Wednesday

Mesquite Horn, 7:30 p.m., Hanby Stadium

Though they only went 4-6 last season, the Jaguars still made the playoffs and lost to perennial powerhouse Copperas Cove, 21-7. They are a team full of young, up-and-coming stars and should improve on that record this season. Quarterback Emory Miller threw for 2,740 yards, 19 touchdowns and 15 interceptions -- a number that should diminish with another year of experience.

Thursday

Rockwall-Heath, 6:30 p.m.
With Kendial Lawrence, and his 2,500-plus, 40-plus touchdowns off to Columbia, Mo., the Hawks have a lot to replace after their breakout season last year which saw them go undefeated in the regular season and make it four rounds deep in the playoffs before a nail-biting loss to eventual state champion Sulphur Springs. It all starts here.

Saginaw Boswell, 7 p.m.
Going 5-5 last year, including a win against archrival Saginaw on the regular season's final night to clinch a playoff berth, the Pioneers will be without a lot of key components from last season, most notably wide receiver Cameron Mavroulis.

Irving MacArthur, 6 p.m.
After a 3-7 campaign last year, the Cardinals have a lot to improve on, but unfortunately for them, it's been ages since any Irving ISD school has really made any noise in football. This year likely won't be much different. They do have running back James Sims back, who so far has offers from North Texas and Kansas. He rushed for almost 1,200 yards and 15 scores last year, while also racking up nearly 400 yards receiving.
