SMU Announces Class of 2018 During National Signing Day

Head coach Sonny Dykes has only been on the job for a couple of months at SMU. The recruiting trail started the minute he took over the football program right before the Frisco Bowl in December.  His first signing class is now officially in the books.

The Mustangs had 12 new players sign on the dotted line during National Signing Day on Wednesday, joining the seven that previously signed on Early Signing Day two months ago.  14 of the 19 total signees are from the high school ranks with the other five being junior college transfers.

SMU announced the addition of 12 new student-athletes in the first National Signing Day class under new head coach Sonny Dykes.

Four of those players are from North Texas– Cedar Hill defensive tackle Shabazz Dotson, Duncanville defensive tackle Terrance Newman, Mesquite Poteet linebacker Jimmy Phillips, Jr. and FW All Saints linebacker Jalen Rispress.

The first spring practice for SMU on March 21 and the annual spring game will be held on April 14. The Mustangs open the season on the road against North Texas on Sept. 1. The home opener is the following week against TCU in the Battle for the Iron Skillet.
