Rumored Cowboys Target Closer to Being Free Agent

Baltimore has eight more days to negotiate a new deal with LB Ray Lewis.

Ray Lewis perked up the ears of Cowboys fans earlier this month when he told the Baltimore Sun he found the idea of playing for Dallas intriguing.

"I don't see all of that outside stuff that they're talking about what goes on in Dallas," Lewis said. "I see Dallas as a great opportunity. It's always been America's Team. It's just a great place to play football."

"I can definitely play with T.O," Lewis said. "I think T.O. is a great, great person. I just love him. I love his work ethic. I love everything about him. So, playing with T.O. is easy."

The chances of actually seeing Lewis in Dallas increased slightly yesterday when the Baltimore Ravens decided to place the franchise tag on his fellow defender Terrell Suggs. If the Ravens and Lewis cannot agree on a new contract by Feb. 27 then he will become a free agent.

There is a majority that believes Lewis's Cowboys flattery was a negotiating ploy with Baltimore, where he would prefer to stay. However, there's also many who believe it would be in Baltimore's best interest to wave goodbye to a player who has spent all thirteen years of his career with the franchise.

If that is the decision Baltimore makes, Dallas would be wise to make signing the middle linebacker, who is considered to be one of the NFL's best leaders on the field and in the locker room, their number one offseason priority. He already has at least two high profile supporters.

This off-season, Owens reached out to Jerry Jones to make a sales pitch if you will for Lewis to join Dallas.

And Deion Sanders, a close friend of Lewis and Owens, has also spoken to Jones about the linebacker.

By the end of the month we'll know whether Jerry Jones will have the opportunity to act on those requests.
