We’ve been lamenting for a week now that the Mavericks aren’t necessarily better with Rajon Rondo.
Thanks to Richard Jefferson’s knee, now we’re about to find out if they’re any better without him.
Rondo suffered an orbital fracture in his left eye and a nasal fracture – ouch, just typing that makes me cringe – and will miss at least the next three games. Rondo won’t play tonight against the Timberwolves or accompany the team on its two-game trip to Golden State and Sacramento later this week.
Just 90 seconds in last Saturday night’s win over the Magic Rondo poked the ball away from Elfrid Payton but then stumbled to the floor. Jefferson didn’t see Rondo as he sprinted down the court and kneed his teammate in the face.
Rondo stayed on the court with blood pouring from his nose for about a minute before leaving for the locker room. His absence could range anywhere from two weeks to two months, according to players who have suffered the injury in the past.
Without him the Mavs will rely more upon J.J. Barea and maybe even Raymond Felton.
