The Texas Rangers selected 20 players Thursday, the third and final day of the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

In the 2009 draft, Texas selected 25 college and 25 high school players, along with one player, supplemental first rounder Tanner Scheppers, from independent baseball.  Of the club’s 51 selections, 30 were pitchers (22 right-handed, 8 left-handed).  The other 21 draftees were position players: 12 outfielders, 7 infielders, and 2 catchers.

The club’s first two picks were both rated top 10 overall prospects by Baseball America prior to the draft, also ranked by that publication as among the top eight pitching prospects in this year’s draft.  Below are some noteworthy items on picks beyond the 30th round:

The club selected Florida high school outfielder Reggie Williams today in the 32nd round.  Williams entered the draft rated as the 119th-best prospect by Baseball America and was tabbed as the fastest runner among high school prospects by that same publication. William’s father, Reggie, Sr., played parts of 4 seasons in the big leagues with the Angels and Dodgers from 1992-99.

Outfielder Kyle Rhoad, a 33rd round pick out of Eastern Michigan, was named a candidate for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award, which is presented annually to collegiate athletes that excel in the classroom, community service, character, and competition.

Right-handed pitcher Matthew Carasiti, a 36th round selection, was named the Connecticut High School Player of the Year after his senior season.
