Colby Lewis was always clutch on the mound under playoff pressure for the Rangers. Now the former pitcher will be honored for his contributions to the organization.
Lewis, now a special assistant to the general manager, is the recipient of the 2018 Mark Holtz Alumni Award.
He ranks among all-time Rangers leaders in starts, wins and innings. The 28th overall selection by Texas in the 1999 MLB draft, Lewis made his MLB debut in 2002 and spent parts of three seasons with the Rangers. After spending time with four other MLB organizations and a two-year stint in Japan, Lewis returned to Arlington and was a mainstay in the Rangers starting rotation for seven seasons, winning ten or more games four times.
It was the postseason where Lewis made his money. He went 4-2 with a 3.11 ERA in 10 career playoff games (nine starts). That’s good enough for the most wins and tied for most starts in franchise history. Lewis won two starts in the 2010 ALCS against the New York Yankees, including the series-clinching Game 6 to help send the Rangers to their first-ever World Series. He had the lone win for the Rangers during that series with the San Francisco Giants. He allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six in the 4-2 win.
Lewis also won Game 2 of the 2011 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. He started the infamous Game 6, allowing four runs (two earned) in just over five innings of work. Rangers fans know the rest when it comes to Game 6.
Lewis will be honored at the 2018 Dr Pepper Texas Rangers Awards Dinner on Friday. Tickets for the dinner, which will honor a number of baseball personalities and feature appearances by Texas Rangers past and present, are now on sale at www.texasrangers.com/awards. Individual tickets for the Dr Pepper Awards Dinner are priced at $110.00 each with tables of ten also available. Net proceeds benefit the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation.
