North Texas Sport Wants More Big Events

A task force supporting the 2011 Super Bowl in Arlington has proposed creating a nonprofit group called North Texas Sport to attract other big events.

The proposal was offered Monday during a task force meeting in Arlington. Cowboys Stadium will host the Feb. 6, 2011, game.

The Dallas Morning News reported Tuesday that the group would be the third sports commission created in North Texas since the late 1980s. The other two, inspired by bids for World Cup soccer and the Summer Olympics, operated for several years before disbanding.

Host committee member Robert Estrada says that cooperation among cities in planning the Super Bowl makes this the ideal time to organize a new sports commission.

The proposal would need Super Bowl host committee approval.
