AA Adds Flights For Frogs

Bowl game demand prompts airline to add flights

Fort Worth-based American Airlines is adding extra flights to accomodate what may be the hottest ticket of the New Year, the TCU-Boise State matchup in the Fiesta Bowl.

Flights from DFW to Phoenix started selling out quickly as soon as the TCU Horned Frogs jumped into their first BCS bowl game. Demand has been so great, American Airlines had to call an audible and add extra flights.

"TCU is our hometown team," said AA spokesman Tim Smith.

Smith said AA is shuffling flights to try to keep up with the fans, though, as of Dec. 11, most American flights from DFW to Phoenix were sold out for Jan. 2. All 10 flights are non-stops.

Jan. 2 appears to be the travel day of choice for fans trying to get to Tempe, Ariz., for the bowl game on Jan. 4.   So, American Airlines is adding an extra plane on the Jan. 2, and an extra return flight on Jan. 5.  The flights are on a 757, which brings another 188 seats into the mix.

If that additional flight sells out, the airline will consider adding another.

Of course, tickets for traveling on the prime days will cost more.  Fans looking to save money, may want to consider flying on New Year's Day or returning on Jan. 6 to cut the price of the ticket.
