Mean Green Opens Big Against Texas A&M International

UNT wins exhibition game against Texas A&M International.

Newcomer Dominique Johnson scored 22 points to lead the North Texas men’s basketball team to an 89-58 exhibition win against Texas A&M-International on Wednesday night at the Super Pit.

The Mean Green extends its exhibition record to 12-0 under head coach Johnny Jones.

North Texas started off slow but opened the second half with an 18-8 run and then cruised to a victory. The Mean Green trailed by as many as seven points, but came back to build a double-digit lead in the second half.

Johnson led all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field. He hit three three-pointers. Sophomore Tristan Thompson followed with 18 points. Josh White and sophomore transfer George Odufuwa also scored in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Odufuwa led the team in rebounds with seven boards.

Texas A&M International led for most of the first half, leading by seven points, 17-10, at 13:32. White and Johnson hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the lead to one, 17-16. Neither team led by more than three points until the Mean Green scored nine straight points to end the half ahead, 42-33. Thompson started the 9-0 run with a four-point play after getting fouled hitting a three.

After starting the second half on an 18-8 run, North Texas led by as many 32 points. The Mean Green shot 47.1 percent from the field, compared to the Dustdevils’ 33.3 percent.  NT also held the edge in rebounds, 51 to 38.

North Texas opens its regular season on Friday, Nov. 14 when it plays Cameron in the Snake Pit in Denton .
