Mavs Sign Two Forwards With Eye Toward Future

The Mavs on Monday signed two forwards that, with any luck, will play next season in … Frisco.

Dallas took a respite from filling its DeAndre Jordan void to stockpile young talent for its Developmental League team, the Texas Legends.

Free-agent forwards Jamil Wilson and Brandon Ashley are talented, but are likely long-shots to make the team’s regular-season roster.

Wilson, from Marquette, is a 6-foot-7, 230-pounder who last year started for the D-League’s Bakersfield outfit. Ashley, 6-9 and 230, starred at the University of Arizona and helped the Wildcats to consecutive Elite Eight appearances. But he went undrafted in June and averaged 10 points and 5 rebounds for the Hawks’ Las Vegas Summer League team to catch the Mavs’ eye.

With injury possibilities and Dirk Nowitzki’s advancing age, the forwards could at some point make an appearance at American Airlines Center next season.

A native Texan who was born in Duncanville and graduated from UT-Arlington, Richie Whitt has been a mainstay in the Metroplex media since 1986. He’s held prominent roles on all media platforms including newspaper (Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Dallas Observer), radio (105.3 The Fan) and TV (co-host on TXA 21 and numerous guest appearances, including NBC 5). He lives in McKinney with his wife, Sybil, and two very spoiled dogs.
