Mavs' GM Says Another Piece to Puzzle is Imminent

Help arrived to the Mavericks in the form of Rajon Rondo. After three games it’s clear that more is needed.

And, according to general manager Donnie Nelson, another addition is on its way.

The Mavs were blitzed by the Suns Tuesday night in Phoenix, falling to 1-3 with Rondo in the lineup and the victory being a home win over the Spurs’ junior varsity that was in doubt until the final minute. Rondo again put up stats last night with 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists, but it’s clear Dallas is struggling to find a new identity with him here and Brandan Wright now in Boston.

Nothing a big, athletic body won’t cure, right? Like, say, Josh Smith or Jermaine O’Neal?

“I feel pretty good that we'll be able to come to terms with one,” Nelson said Tuesday afternoon on ESPN radio. “Certainly to come up with both would be just hitting a grand slam home run. Look, there's a long line for suitors on both fronts. I think the fact that Jermaine has chosen Dallas to be his home in the long term certainly has its place and resonates with time with family and such. And here's a guy who has a long history not only with our coach but with our point guard/quarterback. That certainly has a place. With Josh, again, we're one of a number of potential teams and suitors. It's got to be right with him and with us. We're kind of in the swings of putting our best foot forward. If we're able to hit that one home, it just would be a real, real nice get for us.”

Both Smith and O’Neal are big, veteran bodies. They likely won’t bring the high-flying lob dunks we go so accustomed to with Wright, but the Mavs obviously need one more piece to finish their 2015 puzzle.
