Mavs Do the Right Thing by Resting Dirk Nowitzki

The Mavs have rebounded from that hideous home loss to the Pacers with three straight victories.

They’re still waiting for Dirk Nowitzki to regroup.

Nowitzki, 36, got a rare DNP-Rest in Saturday night’s win over the hapless 76ers. Apparently if it’s good enough for Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobli and Tony Parker, it’s now good enough for the Mavs and their aging star.

Head coach Rick Carlisle said he would have sat Nowitzki no matter the opponent, and we can only take him at his word. But there’s no doubt the giant German is suddenly struggling. He went only six of 19 in a Friday win in Toronto and has missed 23 of his last 27 3-pointers.

In a continued effort to manage his minutes, sitting him out a full game is certainly an effective measure.

Dirk will be ready to play Tuesday in Chicago. More importantly, moves like this will have him healthy come April.
