Mavericks Sign Former Backup Center James With Chandler Out

The Dallas Mavericks have signed center Bernard James to a 10-day contract with Tyson Chandler out for at least the final game before the All-Star break.

The 6-10 James spent his first two pro seasons as a backup with Dallas before he was waived at the end of training camp in October. He played in China after that.

Chandler will miss Wednesday night's game against Utah after spraining his left ankle in a loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday. Coach Rick Carlisle is optimistic Chandler will be ready when the All-Star break ends Feb. 19 at Oklahoma City.

James was drafted early in the second round in 2012 and averaged 2.1 points and 2.3 rebounds in 76 games with the Mavericks.
