Late TD Sends Ennis Past Cedar Park for 5A-II Title

Donta Thompson scored the winning touchdown on a 36-yard pass with 21 seconds remaining, and Ennis won its fifth state title with a 38-35 victory against Cedar Park in the Class 5A Division II championship game Friday night.

The winning play was set up when Ennis (14-2) converted a third-and-19 with a hook-and-ladder play. Quarterback Devin Smith threw to Alston Lawrence, who pitched back to running back Taylor Thompson for a 31-yard game.

On the next play, Smith threw the winning pass to Donta Thompson, who had 99 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

Cedar Park's Amir Alzer had two scoring passes on fourth-and-long, including a 21-yarder to David Fiala for a 35-31 lead with 4:21 remaining.

Thomas Hutchings had 18 carries for 155 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown in the second quarter, for Cedar Park (12-4).
