‘Horns Look To Build On History

Sixty years after their first College World Series, in Wichita, Kansas, the University of Texas Longhorns are headed back to Omaha.
 
The Longhorns beat the TCU Horned Frogs 5-2 on Monday night to clinch the final spot in the tournament, an eight-team, double-elimination affair. Texas will share Bracket II with North Carolina, Arizona State and Southern Mississippi.
 
These four teams will play until a winner is decided, and that team will move on to face the winner of Bracket I (Cal St. Fullerton, Arkansas, LSU, Virginia) in a best of three series to determine a champion.
 
The finals will begin on June 22.
 
Texas will return to Omaha for the first time since 2005, when they emerged as the College World Series champions; this will be the team’s 33rd trip to the World Series, already a collegiate record.
 
The ‘Horns already own the NCAA record for College World Series wins, with 78, and their seven championships are second only to the University of Southern California's 12 wins.
 
Texas, who entered the tournament as the top national seed, will open up play against Southern Mississippi on Sunday evening.
