HS Football, Residents Return to Bastrop

Another sign of recovery from Central Texas wildfires has happened on the athletic field.

The Bastrop High School football team ran on to the field Thursday night with a banner that read, "Out of the ashes we rise."

The Bears went on to defeat San Marcos 48-23 at Memorial Stadium in Bastrop, about 25 miles east of Austin.

Volunteer firefighters and other emergency responders were honored during a halftime ceremony.

The Bastrop ISD canceled classes last week due to raging wildfires that destroyed hundreds of homes and scorched about 34,000 acres. Extracurricular activities were also called off. School resumed Monday.

Bastrop coach Gerald Perry said you see small victories every day in the community and in the players.
