Gwaltney, Cats Blank Sioux City

Lee Gwaltney worked seven shutout innings and Ryan Patterson drove in three runs as the Cats downed Sioux City 7-0 on Tuesday night at LaGrave Field.

In front of a crowd of 3,227, the Cats scored twice in the first inning on an infield single by Patterson and a sacrifice fly by Pat O'Sullivan.

They added another run in the fifth as Brian Fryer led off with a single, stole second and came around to score on Patterson's second run-scoring single of the night. The Cats broke the game open in the seventh inning as they scored four times on a Fryer RBI single, a Patterson sacrifice fly and two wild pitches.

Gwaltney cruised through seven innings, not allowing a runner past second base. He struck out seven and only walked one while permitting four hits to collect his second win of the season. Joel Kirsten came out of the bullpen and threw two scoreless innings to complete the Cats' first shutout of the season.

Nick Singleton (0-1) took the loss as he allowed six runs, five earned on seven hits in six innings of work.

The win gives the Cats their fifth victory of the season and improves their league-best record to 5-1.

The two teams wrap up the three-game series on Wednesday morning at 11:05 a.m. Aaron Crow (1-0) goes for the Cats and Curt Pasma will be on the mound for Sioux City.
