Former NFL Coach Bill Cowher's Wife Dies Of Skin Cancer

Kaye Cowher, the wife of former Pittsburgh Steelers coach and current CBS pro football analyst Bill Cowher, died yesterday in North Carolina after battling skin cancer, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. She was 54 years old.

The former Kaye Young was on North Carolina State’s women’s basketball team that won the Atlantic Coast Conference title in 1978. That same year, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. Kaye and her twin sister Faye then played for the Women’s Professional Basketball League until the league folded in 1981

She met her future husband Bill Cowher as classmates at North Carolina State in 1976; they later married five years later. The couple have three children: Meagan, Lauren and Lindsay.

According to the Post-Gazette, Faye Cowher was always present in the press box during Steelers games and “was considered as resolute and steely as her more famous husband.”

She was regarded as influential in her husband’s decision to leave football in 2007, so that her family could move to her native North Carolina.

No information on Faye Cowher’s death has been released. Services are scheduled in North Carolina for Monday, said the Post-Gazette.
