Diamonds Name Former Tech WR as New Head Coach

Dallas' 4-Time World Champion women's professional football team, the Diamonds, has named former Texas Tech wide receiver Brian Bishop as their head coach.

Bishop, 26, was introduced to the world of women's football by retired Diamonds head coach Todd Hughes who brought the young coach onto the team to work with his recievers but quickly promoted him to assistant offensive coordinator.

"When I first heard about women and football, I thought powder puff, flag football, a bunch of girls who don't want to touch and don't want to hit. Boy did my eyes get opened," said Bishop. "This is not powder puff. This is real, legit, full contact, give all you got football."

Bishop hopes to continue to instill in his players the same winning attitude forged by Hughes; An attitude that brought four world titles in five seasons and made them the most successful professional sports team in North Texas this century.

"Hughes is not being replaced, he is retiring. It's going to be a little easier for me to step in and instill the same goals and attributes he had but yet do it in my own way. I bring a new style or flavor with a more spread open offense."

Bishop has local ties and learned the game growing up and playing at Coppell High School where he was named All-District and All-State.  He then went to Tyler Junior College where he was named a Blue Chip Top 100 JUCO Player. He would later round out his collegiate career with Texas Tech and Texas A&M Commerce.

The Diamonds finished 11-0 in 2008 and won their 4th IWFL Championship in five seasons. Bishop and the Diamonds' first test of the 2009 campaign will come soon.  The team began preseason workouts last weekend in anticipation of their first game on April 11 against their in-state rival, the Houston Energy.
