DeSoto High School Girls Track Team Wins Stateโ€ฆ Again

The Lady Eagles have won eight of the last 13 team state track titles

Itโ€™s become an annual right of Spring โ€“ DeSoto High School running away from its competition at the UIL Track and Field Championships. On Saturday, the Lady Eagles won their fourth consecutive team title.

It all began with Brianna Washington's domination in the discus.

"Coming in ranked sixth and getting second place I feel like was a big accomplishment for me," Washington said.

That big accomplishment was followed by an even bigger one. The Lady Eagles set a national record in the 4x100 meter relay, topping their own mark from a week before.

"We ended up breaking it even more," senior Taylor Armstrong said. "So it's there and we don't want nobody to touch it."

"They ran a 44.24 which is fastest any four high school girls have ever run, so it's pretty exciting," DeSoto head coach June Villers said.

The Lady Eagles have won eight team state titles in the last 13 years. With success like that, nobody expects anything less.

"I feel like me and my teammates, we actually can keep it going hopefully until my senior year and hopefully after that," sophomore Jalaysiya Smith said. "I feel like we have a lot of girls who are capable of going to the state meet and possibly winning it, so that's all I want."

And that could spell trouble for DeSotoโ€™s opponents for many years to come.
