Cowboys Can't Afford to Lose

Injuries and underachievement force Cowboys into must win mode

Here we sit in week eight of the NFL season, and we're talking about one of the league's more talented teams in must win mode.

Make no mistake about it, the Cowboys are already in their playoffs.

At a disappointing 4-3, Dallas has dug themselves a hole no one saw coming.

Granted injuries have played a role, but so has underachievement.

Now, with Tony Romo out until mid-November, and their toughest three-game stretch of the season, the Cowboys are in real danger of playing their way out of the post season if they don't get wins.

The theme today at Valley Ranch was rally week.

They have to rally around Wade Phillips, who's now on the hot seat. One, as head coach. Two, as defensive coordinator.

Phillips announced yesterday, he'll take over defensive play calling duties from Brian Stewart.

It's also rally time for the offense, who must get behind Brad Johnson.

There isn't anyone who thinks this guy can lead this team to three-victories in this tough stretch, and the players know it.

Jason Witten, Terrell Owens, and Marion Barber know they'll have to play huge to get this team back on course.

There is plenty of football to be played. But, for a guy that penciled in the Cowboys as a Super Bowl lock, I can't believe I'm living in a football world where Dallas is on the outside looking in.

I guess we're just covering playoff football sooner than expected.
