When NFL free agency starts on Wednesday, the Cowboys should indeed go after a former Texas high school star and ex-Redskins starting quarterback.
But, no, not Robert Griffin III. How about Colt McCoy?
I got the idea when I saw McCoy at the Longhorns’ basketball game against Kansas this week. He was sitting beside familiar faces Jason Witten and Tony Romo. Why not sign him to be Romo’s backup? Makes sense on several levels.
At this point in their careers, McCoy is a better quarterback than Griffin. It’s more about the nosedive of Griffin than the ascension of McCoy, but nonetheless I’d rather have the latter start a must-win game for my team. Only 29, McCoy has 25 made starts in his six seasons including his highlight – the memorable win in AT&T Stadium on Monday Night Football in 2014.
He’ll be affordable. He shares agents with Cowboys’ coaches Jason Garrett and Scott Linehan. He’s better than Kellen Moore.
And, most of all, his arrival would negate the Cowboys’ manufactured desperation to draft Romo’s eventual successor with the 4th overall pick.
