Cowboys Defensive Coordinator Stewart Out

Brian Stewart released by team Friday.

The Dallas Cowboys released defensive coordinator Brian Stewart Friday.

Stewart spent two years on the Cowboys staff, joining the team from San Diego along with Wade Phillips.

Phillips took over the defensive play calling after an October loss to St. Louis.

The Cowboys finished the season 9-and-7 and gave up 22.8 points per game, which was 20th in the league.

The team was a pre-season pick to reach the Super Bowl but instead missed the playoffs.

This is the second coaching change for the team.

Special teams coach Bruce Read was fired and replaced by Joe DeCamillis.
