College Recruiting Keeps Getting Crazier

A lot of things have changed since the good old days.

Did you ever wonder how Darrell Royal recruited kids to play football at Texas, or Bear Bryant at Alabama, or even more recently Barry Switzer at Oklahoma?

Whatever it was, I can guarantee you the kids they were after didn't have this luxury at their fingertips.

This national underclassmen combine is just one of many like it that help high school football players -- of all ages -- prepare for the recruiting process to play NCAA football. In fact, there's even a separate seminar called "All-American Recruiting Experience Parent/Athlete" session, along with numerous other sessions designed to improve physical attributes such as 40-yard dash time and vertical leap -- the stuff that catches college coaches' eyes.

This camp is actually coming to the Metroplex next weekend when it will be held at Duncanville High School on March 13-15. There's sessions such as the one above, as well as one for incoming juniors, incoming seniors and even for incoming freshman and sophomores.

Let's take a look at some guys who would be stars at this camp next weekend:

Darius White, Fort Worth Dunbar, WR - Not to diminish the kid, but he's a combine freak. What I mean is, he's also got talent on the field, but just check out his numbers. 6 foot 4, 205 pounds, 4.5 40-yard dash, 40-inch vertical leap. In other words, he'll go to college wherever he wants to go to college.

Scotty Young, Denton Ryan, QB - I still can't believe this kid was on the junior varsity team as a sophomore, but he was. And in his first season as a varsity quarterback, he nearly re-wrote the state passing record books, throwing for 65 touchdowns in 13 games (two shy of Graham Harrell's state record) and just 11 interceptions while throwing for nearly 4,500 yards. And while he was in a prolific passing system with two superstar wideouts, don't write him off as a system quarterback. He just might throw a fastball at your face -- one of his low- to mid-90s fastballs that is. The kid has an absolute cannon attached at his right shoulder. And at 6 foot 3, he's got the size college coaches look for.

Adam Boedeker is a sports writer/blogger for the Denton Record-Chronicle. He thinks he might actually turn into a chicken margherita pizza after tonight.
