Captains Down Cats 7-2 in Series Opener

Shreveport-Bossier takes down Fort Worth's Cats in the first game

Captains right fielder Dwayne White was 4-for-5 with two runs batted in as the Captains defeated the Cats 7-2 on Monday night at Fair Grounds Field.

The win was the third for the Captains in the first four games played between the two teams this year.

Kelley Gulledge gave the Cats a 1-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI double scoring Pat O'Sullivan. O'Sullivan was 2-for-4 in the game to extend his record hitting streak to 25 games.

Shreveport-Bossier would tie the game in the third inning on an run-scoring double by Andres Rodriguez.

The Captains took the lead in the fourth inning as shortstop Jose Salazar, playing in his fourth game in a Shreveport-Bossier uniform, singled home Kevin Griffin for a 2-1 advantage. They added two more runs in the inning on White's two-run single. Christopher Garcia chased Cats' starter Ryan Trytten from the game with a broken-bat RBI single to center to make it 5-1 in the fourth.

Trailing 5-1 in the seventh, Fort Worth took advantage of two errors at the start of the inning and scored a run on a Ryan Patterson sacrifice fly. They would bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but could not get another run across.

Shreveport-Bossier added to its lead in the bottom of the seventh as a run came home to score on a throwing error by Cameron Blair. They made it 7-2 on an RBI single by BJ Wheeler.

Logan Williamson (4-2) earned the win for Shreveport-Bossier as he allowed two runs, one earned on five hits in 6 2/3 innings of work. Trytten, making his first 2009 start in a Cats' uniform, went 3 1/3 innings and permitted five runs on nine hits to drop to 0-1 on the year.

The Cats continue the series with the Captains on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. in Shreveport. Joel Kirsten will be on the mound for the Cats and will be opposed by Shreveport's Thad Markray.
