Can Denton Guyer Repeat Last Year's Success?

Wildcats' spring game will answer some questions

After their breakout 12-3 season last year that ended with a 41-30 loss to Longview in the Class 4A Region I state semifinals, the Denton Guyer Wildcats return more than half of their starters and will hope to fill some vacated starting roles beginning with tonight's spring game, which highlights a list of games taking place tonight.

Denton Guyer, 6 p.m.
Losing 6-5 tackle Kyle Clark to Texas Tech and 6-7 tackle Jesse Coffey to Nebraska has many people questioning whether the Wildcats' spread-option rushing attack can continue to hit on all cylinders behind quarterback J.W. Walsh and running back Jaimaine Wilhite, who both are returning key contributors. But with the move of big man Cole Underwood from tight end to tackle and the arrival of backup Josh Hard on an every-down basis, head coach John Walsh said there will be no drop-off. After going 1-19 in their first two varsity seasons before last year's emergence, it appears Guyer is set to stay at the top for some time.

Wylie, 6 p.m.
Going 13-3 last year with their only losses coming to national powers Plano, Allen and Katy in the Class 5A Division II state championship game, the Wylie Pirates and all of their "AHMO" magic are back again this year. Of course, they lose the heart and soul of their defense in undersized nose tackle Nikita Whitlock (best name in DFW last year) but they will still be a formidable opponent. On offense, they have a ton back, starting with Wake Forest commit running back Nick Knott, who rushed for 1,362 yards and 22 touchdowns as a junior. They do have to replace quarterback Jerod Monk, who signed with Baylor after leading Wylie to the title game with 2,820 yards passing and 21 touchdowns.
