A Look at Spring Football Happenings

Many area powers getting first glimpse of 2009

Matt Wixon and my boy Brian Davis of The Dallas Morning News released this video the other day, and I thought I'd share it with you folks.

It focuses mainly on 5A Division I state champion Allen and the Eagles' quarterback Matt Brown along with the youth and inexperience in their secondary.

They bring up a couple of good points, mainly whether or not Euless Trinity will climb back to the top of the DFW football world and get back in the state championship game under head coach Steve Lineweaver and his haka-lovin' bunch. You can never count the Trojans out -- ever, it's just silly to do.

But I think the most interesting point brought up by Matt and Brian was the future of Rockwall-Heath. After just a few years of playing varsity football, the Hawks went 13-1 and finished just two games shy of the state championship game coming out of one of the better 4A districts in the area that includes perennial power Highland Park, who the Hawks beat 38-31 in the season finale.

The Hawks lost eight players to Division I scholarships, including stud, all-everything running back Kendial Lawrence, who signed with Missouri after exploding onto the scene with 2,679 yards and 43 touchdowns on the ground.

Their scenario kind of reminds me of the one in Denton at the new kid in town -- Guyer. The Wildcats were 1-19 in their first two years before going 12-3 last year and being 12 points away from going to the state championship game in a breakout season. Guyer lost four players to Division I scholarships and had several others get Division II and JUCO offers.

I'll be checking out the Wildcats' spring game in two weeks and will have a full report.
