Eight West Texas A&M University football players face burglary charges after police said they forced their way into an apartment to confront a student who used a racial slur.
The school's athletic director, Michael McBroom, says the second-degree felony arrest warrants were issued this week for the eight players, who have been suspended until, quote, "they resolve their off-the-field issues."
The Amarillo Globe News reports police said in November, a student who is not a football player got into an argument with another student, who allegedly used the slur.
Canyon police Detective Shayne Mays told the newspaper the student left the apartment after the slur was used and returned with a group of about 25 to 30 other students, including the football players.
Two people broke into the apartment through a bedroom window and opened the front door to allow the rest of the group inside and numerous suspects assaulted the victim.
If convicted, each player faces two to 20 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
