15 Years After Drafting His Dad, Dallas Looking at Mario Edwards Jr.

Mario Edwards Sr. was drafted by the Cowboys in 2000

Of all the prospects in which the Dallas Cowboys have shown interest this offseason, Florida State defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. stands out as the only legacy.

Edwards’ father Mario Sr., a cornerback, was drafted by the Cowboys out of Florida State in the sixth round of the 2000 Draft, and spent four seasons with the team. So when Edwards Jr. visited the Cowboys last week, it wasn’t his first time at Valley Ranch.

I went a few times when I was younger,” Edwards said, per Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas. “I got a chance to go on the field. I met Darren Woodson, Emmitt Smith, things like that.”

Before Florida State, Edwards Jr. was a stand-out at Denton Ryan and he has the same outlook approaching the draft as most local products who grew up watching the Cowboys--sure it would be cool to wear the Star, but just getting a shot in the NFL is the important thing.

“That would be nice,” Edwards said. “That would be going back home to where I grew up in high school. It would be nice, but I don’t care where I go. I just want to go play.”
