Wendy Davis Campaigns in Waxahachie Saturday

State Sen. Wendy Davis made a campaign stop in staunchly Republican Ellis County on Saturday.

To have a shot at becoming the governor she's going to have to not only get Democrats to go to the polls in droves, but win over some Republicans.

She told supporters at the Ellis County Democratic Party Headquarters she hopes to help stop the divisiveness in state politics.

Davis told NBC 5, "I don't see through a partisan frame, I see through the voices and concerns of the people that I represent."

Davis began her day in Waxahachie chatting with area teachers and administrators over coffee at El Mexicano Grill and Cantina.

While there, several women told Davis they don't always feel they have the resources they need but do the best they can.  They want more, they believe Davis could deliver and they think it says something her first campaign stop is about education.

"It shows me that she is interested in what we're saying and she's listening to us and taking notes," said Edith Finley, an assistant principal in the Ennis Independent School District.

"She has done a wonderful job on the education committee and I think Wendy really cares about the kids in this state and I think that's so important because we haven't had that in a long time," said Joy Brady, a retired teacher from the Garland Independnet School District.

After the informal 30 minute visit with the teachers, Davis headed a couple blocks down to meet with volunteers making calls on her behalf.  The people who are 100 percent behind her said they’re not blind to the fact a Democratic governor hasn’t been elected in Texas since 1990.

"I think it's going to be a rough go for her,” said Finley.”

"It is an uphill climb.  I won't deny that,” added Brady, who plans to help get people registered to vote in Ellis County.

NBC 5 asked Davis how she responds to political consultants who said unless her opponent makes big mistakes in the campaign, she can't win.

"My reaction is this campaign is about bringing the voice of Texas back,” said Davis.  “Making sure the priorities of Texans is communicated through the promise of what Texas has to offer in the economy, in education, in respecting and taking care of our veterans when they return from the service.  I trust Texans to elect a voice that's going to be true to those concerns."
