Sheffield Beats Rep. Miller in Texas District 59

After losing to Miller in 2010, Sheffield bounces back for win

Gatesville physician J.D. Sheffield has defeated Texas state Rep. Sid Miller for the Republican nomination for House District 59.

Sheffield, who lost to Miller in 2010, seized on a wave of discontent with incumbents in the Republican primary to force his way into Tuesday's runoff and defeat Miller in the rematch.

Miller, a rancher, authored Texas' law requiring a woman have a sonogram before getting an abortion and was a key ally for Republican Gov. Rick Perry and House Speaker Joe Straus. Miller is the chairman of the House Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee.

But Miller also faced criticism over the Republican-led efforts to cut $4 billion from public education in 2011.
