Rhode Island's State Attorney General Aims to Stop Online Plans for 3D Guns

Rhode Island's attorney general is demanding that federal officials stop the online spread of blueprints showing how to make 3D-printed plastic guns.

Attorney General Peter Kilmartin recently joined other attorneys generals challenging a settlement between the State Department and a Texas-based company that wants to release the blueprints online. A federal judge temporarily blocked the release.

Kilmartin said Tuesday several other websites have illegally posted them online.

He joined in a letter sent to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Signed by 22 attorneys general, it asks for swift action to remove the files and enforce federal law against those who posted them.

Kilmartin says inaction by the State Department is a "dereliction of duty."

The State Department declined to comment.
