Patrick Stuns Dewhurst, Forces Lt. Gov. Runoff

Runoff election will be held this May

Houston Sen. Dan Patrick says his strong showing in the GOP race for Texas lieutenant governor shows that the tea party is "alive and well" in the state.

Patrick will face incumbent Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in a May 27 runoff.

Patrick and Dewhurst were the top two vote-getters Tuesday among a field of four candidates in the GOP primary. Patrick was leading Dewhurst Tuesday.

Patrick told supporters Tuesday evening in Houston that he looks forward to winning and completing "the conservative agenda that the people of Texas want."

The firebrand conservative radio talk show host is trying to oust Dewhurst, who has spent 11 years in one of the most powerful offices in Texas state government.

All of Dewhurst's opponents had argued that he wasn't conservative enough.
