Obama Cabinets May be Boost for Rising Texas Mayor

Texas Democrats say President Barack Obama's anticipated nomination of San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro to be housing secretary could be something of a testing ground.

Castro is widely seen as a possible vice presidential contender in 2016.

Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary and ex-mayor of San Antonio Henry Cisneros says the nomination would be "an important step" for Castro.

The 39-year-old's main selling point could be his life story.

He and his identical twin brother grew up in a working-class Mexican-American neighborhood. They were raised by a single mother who brought them to political rallies.

The brothers pursued politics after earning Ivy League degrees. Joaquin Castro was elected to Congress in 2012 and began his term in 2013, while Julian Castro is serving his third term as mayor.
