Kinky Running Again

Humorist will run as a Democrat

Kinky Friedman is preparing for another run for governor of Texas.

Friedman will formally announce his candidacy in Austin on Tuesday. After the initial announcement, Friedman will travel to Houston, Dallas, El Paso and the Rio Grande Valley.

Friedman said he wants to give teachers a $3,000 across-the-board pay raise and get rid of the TAKS standardized testing for public school students. He said he's planning a fundraiser with Willie Nelson later this month and that he hopes to raise grassroots money online

In 2006, Friedman ran for governor as an independent. This time around, the humorist will run for governor as a Democrat, according to campaign manager Rania Batrice.

Other Democrats running for governor include Fort Worth businessman Tom Schieffer, Hank Gilbert, the party’s 2006 pick for agriculture commissioner, Mark Thompson, the party’s 2006 nominee for railroad commissioner and educator Felix Alvarado.
