Gov. Abbott: End to Tax Cut Standoff Possibly in Sight

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott says the end to a lengthy standoff over tax cuts between the House and Senate appears within reach.

Abbott said Thursday night that a deal could be announced within the next 24 hours. Although practically all Republicans in the Legislature support tax cuts, the House and Senate have been bitterly divided over how to do it.

Abbott wouldn't divulge details but signaled that a deal might cut homeowner property taxes instead of reducing the state sales tax. He has vowed to deliver more than $4 billion in tax cuts before the Legislature adjourns June 1.

A deal would also cool speculation that lawmakers would be called back to the Capitol to work overtime this summer in a special session.
