Fred Meyer, Former Texas GOP Chairman, Dies

Meyer dead at 84

Fred Meyer, a former chairman of the Dallas and state Republican Party has died.

The Republican Party of Texas says Meyer died Monday. He was 84.

Meyer served as state party chairman for six years, from 1988 to 1994. He also served as chairman of the Republican Party in Dallas County.

Former President George W. Bush released the following statement Monday after learning of Meyer's death:

Laura and I mourn the loss of our dear friend Fred Meyer. Fred helped build the Republican party in Texas, and we are grateful for his contributions to the Lone Star State. Our thoughts and prayers are with Barbara and their children.

Current chairman Steve Munisteri says in a statement that Meyer had "an excellent reputation for building up the party's infrastructure and taking care of the nuts and bolts of the political operations."

The Dallas Morning News reports that Meyer was a prolific fundraiser who continued to make calls shortly before his death from his hospital room for a nonprofit group.
