Few State Voters Would Support Perry for President

A poll by the Texas Lyceum has found that 9 percent of likely Republican voters would choose GOP Gov. Rick Perry for president.

Results released Thursday from the non-partisan group show that 54 percent of likely voters think Perry is doing a good job leading Texas. But most support for Republican presidential hopefuls went to Mitt Romney with 16 percent.

Sarah Palin had 14 percent.

The survey found that 51 percent of likely voters approve of President Barack Obama, up slightly from 47 percent in 2010.

Approval ratings for the Texas Legislature slipped to 49 percent, compared to 61 percent last year, in a session dominated by budget cuts.

About 700 people were polled from May 24-31, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percent.
