Embattled Constable Loses Re-Election Bid

An embattled Dallas County constable who faces a corruption investigation has lost in his re-election bid.

Unofficial results show that voters Tuesday decided against Constable Jaime Cortes, who lost in the Democratic primary runoff to Beth Villarreal. The volunteer police officer, who lost to Cortes in 2008, has no Republican opponent in November.

Cortes denies wrongdoing in the special investigation ordered earlier this year by county commissioners amid allegations of corruption and bribery. He has not been charged.

A top Cortes lieutenant was charged in January with bribery and official oppression counts.
